Mr. Sherman E. Hughes, 92, of Grand Saline, passed away November 8, 2020, at his home. He was born May 3, 1928, in Mineola to Homer & Hallie Hughes. Sherman graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University, where he was a collegiate athlete on their football team. He married Gwen Bailiff in Mineola in 1950. Sherman was a coach/teacher for 36 years and a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association. He was also a member of the Mineola Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and the Stephen F. Austin Alumni Assn. He and Gwen had lived in Van Zandt County for the last 34 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Grand Saline. Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, James H. Hughes.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Gwendolyn Hughes of Grand Saline; two sons, Michael Hughes and wife Carolyn and James Hughes and wife JoLynn; five grandchildren, Zach Hughes, Blake Hughes and wife Jenny, Adam Hughes and wife Skyler, Lindsey Martina and husband Tom and Shelby Hughes; seven great-grandchildren, Drake Hughes, Wyatt Hughes, Harper Hughes, Aiden Hughes, Beckett Hughes, Brayden Martina, and Brooklynn Martina.
