LONE OAK – Memorial services for Michael Dave Oakes, known to many as “Mike” or “Happ”, 65, of Lone Oak, are scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday, June 24, 2018, at Bull Creek Cowboy Church, with Rev. Glen Blackmon officiating.
Mr. Oakes passed away June 12, 2018, in a Corpus Christi hospital.
He was born May 24, 1953, in Austin, to Boyce Vanoy and Bettye Jo Gibson Oakes. Mike served as a military police officer in the Air Force and was stationed in Korea. He also served as a peace officer in Edgefield, South Carolina. He lived most of his life in Dallas, and he was a truck driver. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #307 in Lone Oak and the Fulton Community Church. Mike was a retired entrepreneur and a jack of all trades. His past hobbies included riding dirt bikes and motorcycles with friends, fishing, and singing. Mike was well loved by all who came in contact with him. He was proud to be a Texan, and he never met a stranger. Mike will be remembered for his kind and compassionate nature and his friendly, unique, and outgoing personality. He was a true friend to all and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his dad and step-mom, Boyce and Millie Oakes of Luling; daughters, Sarah Jo DePirro of South Carolina and Allison Welch of Tallahassee, Florida; brother, Randy and Elvera Oakes of Lone Oak; step-brother, David and Celia Jones of Haltom City; sisters, Susie Jackson of Fort Worth, Terri and Jess Rictor of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Penny Gardener of Elgin and Carla Saunders of Luling; and step-sister, Jeanne Franklin of Fort Worth. He was also survived by four granddaughters and two grandsons and was known to them as Papa Happ.
He was preceded in death by his mom and step-dad, Bettye Jo and Richard Jones and brother-in-law, James Gardner.
Memorials can be made to the local animal shelter or the disabled vets in honor of Mike.
