Obituary for Rex Shirey Armour

Services for Mr. Rex Shirey Armour, 86, of Grand Saline, are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Sand Flat Baptist Church with Bro. Dennis Morris officiating.
Interment will be in Sand Flat Cemetery under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home, Grand Saline.
Mr. Armour passed away April 13, 2015, at his home in Grand Saline. He was born January 6, 1929, in Dallas to Victor & Thelma Copeland Armour. Mr. Armour spent most of his life in Dallas and Grand Prairie where he was a charter member of Trinity Temple Baptist Church in Oak Cliff as a child and then moved to 8th Street Baptist Church in Grand Prairie. He moved to Grand Saline 26 years ago and became a member of Sand Flat Baptist Church. Rex graduated from Sunset High School in 1946. When Rex was about 13 years old, he attended Stamps-Baxter School of Music for 2 years. He attended Arlington State College and served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Rex retired from Vought Aeronautics with 35 years of service and then returned to school. He received an Associate Degree in Electronics from Mountain View College. Mr. Armour was on a bowling team with John & Annie Glenn (who was the 1st American Astronaut to orbit the Earth and completed 3 orbits in 1962). He enjoyed playing the organ/piano at church and played for the Quartet at Sand Flat Baptist Church and the area nursing homes. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Stanley Bruce Armour; brother, Max Copeland Armour; and son-in-law, Mark Howard Hansell.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Nita Armour of Grand Saline; son and daughter-in-law, Gary & Tammy Armour of Grand Prairie; two daughters, Celia Hansell of Grand Saline and Gwen Armour of Tyler; five grandchildren, Luke Hansell, Lauren Hansell, Tim & Natonia Armour, Erica Collins and Shawn Armour; four great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Luke Hansell, Tim Armour, Shawn Armour, Robert Richardson, Walter Wood and Eric Autry.
Memorials may be made to Gideon’s International.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Friday, April 17, 2015.
